  • On 21 March 2017, the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced the UAE Centennial Vision 2017 that aims to make the country one of the leading nations in the growing knowledge-based world economy. On 26 September 2021, the UAE introduced three new pieces of intellectual property legislation; these include: Federal-Decree Law No.11 of 2021 on the Regulation and Protection of Industrial Property; Federal-Decree Law No.36 of 2021 on Trademarks; and the Federal-Decree Law No.38 on Copyrights and Neighbouring Rights (Copyright Law). This article examines the amendmends to the UAE's Copyright Law and evaluates the law's ability to promote a knowledge-based economy in the UAE. It also provides recommendations on how to reform the law to effectively serve the needs of UAE businesses and consumers in the digital environment.
