  • The esports industry is in full growth, but its sustainability is continuously being hindered by dominating grasp of copyright. Whether through prohibition or mismanagement, major esports scenes have been destroyed by their own right holders. When the rights conferred by copyright have been extended beyond their original purpose to the point that copyright is beginning to sound like an offering anachronism, new solutions are needed. I propose a tier-based, compulsory licensing system, a middle ground that respects the protection and economic incentives conferred by copyright while enabling third parties to use competitive video games to create new, transformative experiences.
