  • In the wake of Pierre Bourdieu’s influential studies, much has been said in cultural policy research about individual cultural workers’ fight for legitimacy and symbolic capital in various art and culture fields. However, less attention has been paid to cultural organisations’ striving for recognition and how such political processes play out in cultural policy. Based on a study of the public debate on a controversial regionalisation reform initiative in Norwegian cultural policy, this article argues that recognition is an important political interest for cultural organisations involved in cultural policy. The public debate on the reform initiative underscores the importance of the state’s role as an agent that can bestow recognition on cultural organisations and their striving for inclusion in the national official culture. The public debate underscores as well that the politics of recognition that unfold in cultural policy is not confined to a sphere of symbolic action, which plays out at the side of “hard” issues of finance and formal organisation. While the politics of recognition emanate from needs for symbolic affirmation, it is inseparably linked in the domain of cultural policy to struggles for public finance and the formal organisation of such responsibilities.
