Huomautus sisällöstä, tiivistelmä tms. The present paper investigates whether and to what extent the European Union (EU) copyright acquis unnecessary limits the freedom of internet users to engage in the creation and dissemination of internet memes. In particular, it analyses the applicability of the caricature, parody and pastiche and quotation and news reporting exceptions to this particular subject matter. It argues that while memes may easily fall within the scope of parody, they might fail to meet the requirements for the remaining exceptions. This leads to a regulatory environment that is unnecessary complex and may frustrate the expectations of internet users.
