However, when British photographer, David Slater, asserted a claim of copyright protection over a selfie photograph taken by a monkey (a crested black macaque) that temporarily stole his camera, the issue of copyright vesting in a work created by a non-human was thrust into the spotlight. Adding an additional layer of interest, Wikimedia, the US-based operation that runs Wikipedia, stated its position that Slater could not claim copyright to the photograph, as it was taken by a monkey ie, not a legal person. Therefore, Wikimedia was free to distribute the photograph because it was deemed to be in the public domain and free from copyright protection.
