Huomautus sisällöstä, tiivistelmä tms. The UK Government's National AI Strategy intends "to make [AI] technologies central to [the UK's] development as a global science and innovation superpower". One of the short-term objectives of this strategy is an assessment of the existing legal regimes in the light of AI, and in March 2021 the UK Government invited reponses to its proposals in relation to copyright, text and data mining, and patents. This opinion reviews only the proposals in relaion to copyright, where the UK Government proposed either removing copyright protection for AI generated works, or reducing the term of protection to five years. This Opinion concludes that the UK Government has little understanding of how copyright works in practice and that, if implemented, its proposals will reduce private sector investment in AI and directly work against the UK's ability to remain at the forefront of AI innovation.
