  • Brand clearance and brand vetting are often associated with the exercise of identifying and filtering out bad names when a company is going about initially choosing a brand name for itself which it needs to protect with registered trade marks. Traditional brand clearance or brand vetting exercises are relatively confined, however. These exercises are typically prior to launch. In essence, therefore, they are generally a one-off exercise. Recent examples demonstrate that this previous approach does not catch these new gesture problems arising after brands are chosen and registered, and may need to be expanded. There is an increasing need for an ongoing process, one which would include gesture vetting. Gesture vetting is a clearance exercise to identify and deal with hand gestures potentially damaging to the brand. This is an extension or evolution of the prior well-established brand clearance exercise. Problem hand gestures arise in a growing variety of circumstances.
